Are You Ready For The Travels Of Your Life?

Monday, January 8, 2018

I'm at that age where everyone is either getting married or having babies and I'm over here trying to get rich, travel the world, and get some abs. At least I have one of those down. I'll let you figure out which one.

It's travel because I'm definitely not married, nor do I have abs (it's on the resolutions list). So, in the words of Shia LaBeouf, "JUST DO IT!" There is so much to experience when traveling it is sometimes surprising that more people don’t jet off more often. On a deep note, when you are able to see as much of the world as possible, it has a way of opening you up in ways that you would never have expected, and this can mean that you grow to understand the world a lot more. Before you step your Adidas wearing foot out that door check off some logistics before you set off, just to make sure that you are genuinely as ready as you could possibly be.

Passport & Documents

Make sure you have yourself a passport and a valid ID. You will need to have your passport in order to travel to most places, but that’s not the only thing to consider here: you also want to make sure that your passport is valid. The general rule is that your passport should be valid for at least six months after your return date. This might seem excessive, but it is just a way of ensuring that you’re not caught as a fish out of water should anything go wrong. In today’s world, you can’t be sure what is going to happen politically, so protecting yourself is in your best interest.  It is a decent investment though. It is good for 10 years. Holla!

You will also want to make sure that you have all the necessary travelling documents before you even pack your bags. Plane tickets, any hotel registration slips, as well as any visas which you might need to use in order to get into the countries you intend on visiting. Learned that one the hard way. Research this beforehand so that you don’t get caught out when you are trying to enter the countries on your list. As long as you have your documents ready, you know you are most of the way there towards being prepared.
Pro Tip: Memorize your passport number and take photos of any important documents because you DO NOT want to be stuck without documentation and no record of it. Yikes.

Something For The Plane

Ever been on a plane for an unbearable amount of time? I draw the line at 6 hours anymore. They just drag on. Make sure you stash some entertaining items in your carry on. Cards, iPad, journal, crochet tools. Onetime I saw a lady bring a yoga mat and had a session right in the middle of the aisle. It doesn't really matter what it is as long as you are happy with it. I’m a reader when it comes to planes. I love a good hard copy of a book but I also like to buy excessive amounts of knickknacks when I travel so I don’t have the space for multiple books. A Kindle is the way to go. Ebook readers are often considered must have travel accessories, and once you have taken one with you abroad you will easily understand why.

Money

Cash is king, am I right? There is very little that you can do, and not very far that you can go, without money in your pocket. Spend some time before your travels figuring out how much you think you will need. Carry out a little research so you can figure out how much you’ll need to have on hand, plus a little extra. Being stuck somewhere without any money could really be a downer on your trip. Plan it out beforehand and you will not end up getting stuck somewhere without money. Aside from cash, most places accept major credit cards as well. Chase freedom has very minimal international fees so that would be a good credit card to look into.

Travels of your life are right around the corner but there are always the logistical shenanigans you have to be aware of before you go anywhere.
