Fall is right around the corner. While the leaves have not yet started to turn red or orange, there’s already promise of crisp mornings and dark starry nights (if you're not in the city obscured by light pollution, of course). Now’s the perfect time to plan a weekend road trip before the weather takes a turn, as there’s still plenty of summer warmth to enjoy.
Founded in 1787, New Jersey has seen a lot of history pass by. Being one of the thirteen colonies, N.J. was originally named for Jersey Island, off the coast of the United Kingdom. Although filled with history, New Jersey's Jersey Shore became a major attraction in the 1920s, around the same time the state became the first to ratify Prohibition. So they know how to rally as well!
While New Jersey might have a terrible reputation when it comes to major roads and highways (it’s the US’s most highway-concentrated state), it has perfect short, scenic and picturesque routes to keep you busy for a quick getaway. You don’t need to drive hours to visit some of the most famous spots in New Jersey. The best thing about this state being so small is that some stretches of the highway don’t even go beyond 40 miles.
Here are a few scenes you should check out should you decide to take a weekend and tour the 150-mile long state.
AN ICON: The Revolutionary War
It’s impossible to go to New Jersey without thinking of the Revolutionary War. It was in NJ that George Washington received the news about the Treaty of Paris, which marked the end of the war. ICONIC! The 25-mile Scenic Byway that takes you to Millstone River, Kingston, Franklin and Hillsborough Townships is a mesmerizing journey through time. Make sure to stop by the Rockingham state Historic Site where Washington stayed. Really jump into autumn with a stroll in the apple orchard nearby. And if the smell of apples makes you feel hungry, head to Princeton center for a yummy meal, or check out Mistral on Witherspoon Street for some sweet treats.
You may be cold, but the Cold War was colder
The war that shaped the history of New Jersey is the Cold War. You can even visit an abandoned missile launch site at Sandy Hook at the edge of the state, Fort Hancock. The ruins are only a reminder of how critical the defense against Soviet nuclear attack was. The beauty of the site lies in the fact that it’s never been used. Take that one back to your ex, HA! Taking a stroll through the ruins of Fort Hancock will give you a new appreciation for peace efforts around the world. However, some extreme spirit-lifting might be needed after this visit so why not jam out! Book your stay at a local hotel near PNC Bank Arts Center, New Jersey’s hot spot for summer festivals. Festivals are particularly popular here during May through September.
Check your Resting Beach (Resort) Face
History doesn’t have a sense of color, I’ll tell you that much. It’s time to bring back colors to your world after visiting these rather monotone historic sites. Cape May is not only one of the oldest seaside resorts, but it is also home to almost 600 beautifully preserved Victorian buildings. For a feel of how life would have been at the time, head to the Emlen Physick Estate, which displays Victorian furniture and gadgets from the 19th century.
Let New Jersey surprise you. For its small size, the state has a surprisingly rich history. But more importantly, it’s a path of wisdom. The historical tour makes you appreciate the peace efforts, and the colorful and vibrant seaside spots remind you to take the time to love the little things. It's the perfect spot for any road tripper.
