You really can’t beat a hearty meal. One where your belly is so full and warm that it puts you into a food coma. While it may be full of flavor, it is also full of memories. According to Wikipedia, comfort food is food that provides a nostalgic or sentimental value to someone and may be characterized by its high caloric nature, high carbohydrate level, or simple preparation.
As a child, my bedtime snack consisted of a slice of
buttered toast, with sliced apples, cinnamon, sugar and a sliver of cheese on
top. Literally, the weirdest combination of tastes (even for a child!), but it
gives me such a nostalgic feeling as an adult.
There are plenty of meals that are going to make you feel
this way. Now that we’re heading into fall, the season where it is more
appropriate to eat those warm nostalgic meals, gone are the days of fruit
salads and smoothies as a refreshing treat. It’s time to reach into your past
and find those foods that give you a nostalgic feeling, the foods that make you
feel comforted and keep you warm.
Potato-Based Dishes
There are just so many things that you can do with potatoes. They are one of the most versatile foods in the world. You can literally turn a potato into countless versions of its former self, and you can cook them in so many diverse and tasty ways. We really do take this simple food for granted, so now it’s time to cook up a storm with potatoes. One of the best ways that you can use them is to fry them. They go with so many different meals, but I think a really hearty meal is fried potatoes with steak and eggs. ‘Steak and eggs’ is an extremely simple meal that you can’t go wrong with, plus the eggs go great with the steak and potatoes if you make them over-easy. They are great for ANY time of the day too.
Vegetables Galore
As an adult, you have probably realized how many comfort
foods you had as a child that contained vegetables. Now you see how sneaky your
family was to get you to eat your vegetables. The best way to make a comfort
food meal full of vegetables is through a roast dinner. If you have a
crock-pot, roast dinners are so simple and casual to cook. It doesn’t have to
be a Sunday or a special occasion for you to have one either. I find roasts
taste better when the weather is really dark and gloomy. There are innumerable
easy roast dinner recipes to follow online! But my favorite is taking the vegetable
broth, adding in some grill seasonings (lemon & herb flavors are my
favorite) and cooking the roast on low for the whole day (which really makes
the meat super tender). Pour the leftover juice on some steamed vegetables and
it will taste just like mom’s recipe back home.
You Can’t Go Wrong With Pasta
Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries. Carbs have the ultimate plug on comfort food. You definitely can’t go wrong with pasta. Like lasagna…. Am I right?! It’s just so warm and filling, and it tastes so good. It does require a little skill to make, but again there are masses of easy recipes that you should be able to follow online! Mac and cheese is simple comfort food that you can’t go wrong with. Boil some water, throw in a little EVOO, some angel hair pasta and a yummy Alfredo sauce. Mmmm… I don’t know about you, but my mouth’s watering!
Now that Fall is (almost) here we can start making hearty
warm recipes and not feel out of place. Not like that would ever stop us
though, right? ;)
