Whether you’re an Instagrammer looking for that hidden gem or someone who is genuinely curious about taking the road less traveled, Los Angeles is the capital of unusual attractions.

From food spinoffs to museums about death, there is a little bit of something to fit everyone’s interest in this bustling city. I travel to L.A. at least twice a year because there is so much to see and I always manage to find myself standing in front of something novel.

If you’re looking for something a little on the eccentric side to do in Los Angeles, there are plenty of unique attractions to be found. While some people might travel to the infamous Griffith Observatory or stroll down Hollywood Boulevard to catch the stars on the sidewalk, that’s just not for everyone. For those of you willing to venture off the beaten path, here are a few unusual things to do in Los Angeles:

Witness the Museum of Death

This sounds very “Purge”-like, but I promise it’s actually way more informative. If you’re interested in all things macabre, the Museum ofDeath is certainly worth visiting. Here you’ll find exhibits on everything from funerals to execution to homicides. There’s an incredible collection of artifacts located here and even some non-death related novelties, such as a two-headed turtle (in case someone in your party isn’t too keen on the morbidity!). It is certainly very unlike the other museums you’ll find in Los Angeles.

Visit an Abandoned Zoo

Yep. There is an abandoned zoo that remains open to the public. Located in Griffith Park, the Old Zoo closed in the 1960s and the ruins have remained there since. It still has many of its original animal cages, which you can wander around. It is a popular picnic site and also forms part of a hiking trail. You can easily make your own wild adventure or photoshoot backdrop out of this hidden gem.

Try an Escape Room

I know escape rooms have become quite popular in most cities of late, but L.A. has a hefty amount of unusual and diverse rooms. They have a big population to serve so they have to bring it! There are many different themed versions across the city, including escape room detective games and horror escape rooms. These could be a great family activity or a scary endeavor with a group of friends. Make sure to book ahead of time and to research the room(s) you want to complete.

Take a Stroll down the Venice Canals

Unbeknownst to many, Los Angeles has its own canals. The Venice Canal Historic District was built in 1905 and features a series of picturesque waterways with original bungalows. Trust me, it’s worth taking a stroll along these canals and taking in the stunning architecture and flora. As someone who seeks out awesome backgrounds for photos, this is a must-see!

Watch the Sunset at the Sunken City

Get lost in Los Angeles ruins. In 1929, a landslide caused a section of Point Fermin to slip into the sea. Remnants of the buildings can still be found on the beach, many of which have since been painted over with urban art. This area has become known as the ‘sunken city’ and is a popular spot for watching the sunset. Bring your significant other and make it a magical moment!
