Italy has been on my travel bucket list for quite some time
now; as I am sure it is on many others’. I have yet to hear of a bad experience
(other than the usual outlying Trip Advisor review) or see a bad photo of the
country. Italy is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, the home of one of the
most romantic languages, and the best place in the world to get pizza (yum!).
Of course, just one trip to this remarkable country wouldn’t be enough - you’d
need a lifetime to make the most of Italy!
I would think that being a blogger Italy would be a
fantastic opportunity to write all kinds of diverse blog posts. There is so
much to do, see and experience that, hopefully, all of you would love to
discover the culture with me. There would be so much blogging on the go that I
would have to look into travel Wi-Fi while I’m there. For now, I still don’t
have concrete plans to make the trip, BUT I already know what I would like to
do…
First and Foremost: Eat Everything
Gelato, pizza, pasta… You know all the favorites. Kick your
Keto diet to the door if you’re headed to Italy because it won’t do you any good
in this carb-loaded country. Italy is the home of food lovers. Any country that
is a friend of carbs is a friend of mine. Every region has its own specialty so
wherever you go, so make sure you try something new.
However, you should know that Italians don’t eat in the same
way as people in other realms of the world. Like many European countries,
Italians tend to eat quite late in the evening and close up shop during the
afternoon for lunch, sometimes for two hours at a time. But Italians have a few
other unspoken rules we should be aware of, such as higher prices for sitting
in coffee shops and expecting you to ask for the bill rather than assuming you
are ready to go. I doubt I’ll be doing much of my blogging in cafes!
Discover Ancient History
Aside
from living out my Lizzie McGuire fantasy by making a wish in the Trevi
Fountain, I want to see all of the histories this country has preserved. Italy
has been populated since the Paleolithic era, so there is plenty to be
discovered. However, the history I’m most interested in (after some intense
Pinterest-ing) is in a small town not far from Naples. If you
guessed Pompeii, congrats, you probably never skipped a day of World Geography
in school. Buried underneath the ash of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii is an
incredibly well-preserved archeological site made up of mosaics, sculptures,
and haunting casts of people caught in the disaster nearly 2,000 years ago.
Of course, I want to see the classics too and you don't need
t go far to discover Rome's history! The Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Forum
are all within walking distance of each other and are easy to access. Rome is
also home to a lot of churches that make for a fascinating detour into the
shade and are worth a decent gander inside.
Culture Myself
Italy, or more specifically, the Romans, laid the foundation
for society today. They were hugely influential as they conquered Europe and
their culture is still popular now. Although it is important to understand
that Italian culture isn’t just about the national identity; regional identity
and tradition are also highly regarded and each town has its own distinctive
style. I would really like to do a European road trip and find as many
different cultural concepts as I would in a single trip around Italy!
When we visit Italy, it’s easy to be swept up by all the
things there are to see and do. Hello, that’s the fun of being a tourist. But,
to truly fit in there, one must understand how to not be in such a hurry to go
from one spot to the next, like we typically do in our day-to-day lives. Find
the joy in doing nothing as well as the joy in discovering everything.
