I’m a huge advocate of traveling to Texas. You can check out my posts here and here if you don’t believe me but there are plenty of reasons to go to Texas – the food, the history, the natural landscape and a better chance of seeing an impromptu rodeo are right around any Texan corner. Texas can be pretty eccentric in its attractions though. Stuff no one would expect to see. Beyond the favorite touristy lures there are plenty of weird and wonderful hidden gem sights to see. Below I have five listed out.



Here are just five unusual attractions for those wanting to adventure off the beaten track.

Explore the Museum of the Weird in Austin

‘Keep Austin Weird’ is the state capital city’s slogan. Fun fact: Portland has the same slogan, but this originated in Austin. The saying was created to entice people to visit local shops and eateries. Ideally, to keep the city’s mix of places not so corporate. There’s all sorts of weird to be found in Austin; from large curiosity stores to a cathedral built out of scrap metal. However, for all your bizarro’s in one area, nothing quite beats the city’s Museum of the Weird. Here you’ll find a collection of oddities ranging from shrunken heads to mummies!

Witness the Art Car Parade in Houston

I'm sure you’ve heard of the space center. It is one of the biggest attractions that persuades people to book a hotel in Houston, Texas, but there are many other quirky tidbits to see and do while in the city. If you plan your visit accordingly and travel in April, you would be able to check out the city’s famous Art Car Parade. In this parade, cars are transformed into wild creations. But, don’t worry. If you’ve got plans to visit at another time of the year, you can still take a tour around the city’s Art Car Museum where some of the best vehicles from previous parades are on display 

Drive past Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo

Everything is bigger in Texas, right? For another crazy car-related attraction, it’s worth taking a drive down to Amarillo. On the outskirts of the city is the famous art installation Cadillac Ranch consisting of ten graffiti-covered Cadillacs buried nose first in the ground. Visitors are encouraged to leave graffiti on the cars. What a neat way for visitors to express themselves.

Take a walk around Stonehenge II near Ingram

If you thought England was the only place to see Stonehenge, you were wrong – Texas has its own lifelike copy of the stone circle. If that wasn’t weird enough, there’s also a replica of an Easter Island head nearby. Like Cadillac Ranch, you’ll need to do some driving to get to these monuments, which happen to be located 60 miles north of San Antonio near the settlement of Ingram.

Visit Bracken Cave in San Antonio

San Antonio is Texas’s most famous city for tourism, primarily due to its history and theme park attractions. However, it’s also the site of the world’s largest colony of bats. These creatures live in Bracken Cave where there’s supposed to be over 20 million of them. While you can’t go to the entrance of the cave, there is a viewing area to which you can get to. Visit on a summer’s evening, and you’ll be able to see all the bats fly high in the sky!
