20 Things I learned the Year I turned 20

Sunday, November 16, 2014

The countdown is almost here. In about a month and a half, I will no longer be 20... I'll be the magnificent, ever-classy, but oh-so-dangerous 21. I'm kind of excited because like hey I live in Vegas and what better way to celebrate but then like at the same time I am still getting older, and that's somewhat freaky. I like to think this year of being 20 has taught me a lot about life though. People always criticize the young for being naive, but I believe they are wrong. I've never felt wiser in my entire life because at the age of twenty you get the fattest reality check EVERRRRRR.

Here are 20 Things I learned the Year I turned 20

1. Make a Budget for yourself and stick to it as closely as possible. I know that sweater is on sale or those shoes are rare but discipline is vital right now.

2. Make your bed every day. Even if you have clothes all over your floor or homework threw everywhere, make your bed. You will feel so much better walking into your room at the end of the day.

3. Take a lot of pictures! Take pictures of your food, friends, selfies, items you like, etc. You have the technology, utilize it. No more storage? Use iCloud. TAKE ALL THE PICTURES! Do live at the moment though once in a while and just be.

4. Daily alone time is crucial for growth. I love spending time with my friends, family, dog, etc. but you do need that "me time" just to wind down.

5. If someone gives you a compliment, smile and say "Thank you." Simple as that.

6. Always keep water and a blanket in your car. You will need these.

7. If your texting someone and are nervous about sending it, just freaking hit the send button; you typed it out for a reason. Don't let fear decide your fate.

8. Coupons will always be "in."

9. Keep some cash on you at all times. Gas is cheaper when you pay cash, and you can't always depend on restaurants splitting checks.

10. You can never over pack! Bring both pairs of shorts, several accessories, and different types of shirts. You never know what you're going to be feeling and you'll be thankful you have options.

11. You don't need to have a life plan right now. An idea is a reliable option, but if you do not have everything figured out its okay, you're only 20.

12. I hate working my part-time retail job just as much as the next person but take those extra hours every once in a while. The extra money will be helpful.

13. Don’t always order the same thing. If you order something new and don't like it send it back, your friends/family won't make you starve; you'll be able to munch off their orders. And if they don't allow you too they aren't the real homies anyway.

14.  Do not carry broken people who are not in the process of fixing themselves. You don't need that extra baggage. Surround yourself with people who make you better than who you want to be.

15. Going to college is an accomplishment.  It does not make you better than anyone else though.  You’re not worth more or more intelligent because you took that step, but let it be known that you should be proud of yourself.

16. Never say no to an opportunity. You never know who you're going to meet

17. Go on trips with your friends. This develops excellent survival skills and motivational tactics to save and time manage.

18. Change your hairstyle up once or twice. Change your clothing style as well. Change them at the same time or at different times. Be a little different, experience a new angle.

19. Wear your shoes all night. Don't take them off because your feet hurt or whatever. You committed to the outfit, rock it the whole night. Never let them see you in pain or anything less than unstoppable.

20. Stop feeling old! Your possibilities are endless! Today may be a bad day; tomorrow has potential to be great. Live your life because you will never be as young as you are right now. Embrace that concept. You are young, and that's a great thing, one of those most envied by generations who criticize us. Eat your ice cream and make your mistakes.
