It may be Winter but smoothies have become my morning
lifeline. It is never too cold to get your nutrients in, am I right?! I know I
can get at least 1-2 servings of fruits and veggies for the day in one
smoothie, so I am not going to skimp out on that.
There really is no wrong way to make a smoothie, but there
is a right way to maximize the nutrients you pack into them. I used to consider
a blender a power tool until I became familiar with the possibilities of one.
Now it is a morning routine staple. I’ve
included my fundamental smoothie ingredients below as well as some of my
classic flavor combos. I’d love for you to share your favorite smoothie combos
in the comments below!
Fundamental ingredients of a great morning smoothies
My smoothies are all dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free, and taste SO yummy.
Fruit - 2 - 3 Types of Fruit
The fruit is the holy grail of the smoothie. What you select here is going
to be your main source of flavor. I'll pack in as many berries as I can into my cup. I typically buy these fresh and then just freeze them myself because frozen bags of fruit can contain unwanted starches and are typically more expensive. Skip the convenience aspect on this one if you're looking to save a few bucks.
Tip: Mango is the superior smoothie fruit. Mango will block out a lot of unwanted flavors from veggies or powders. I always have some on standby in case my blend doesn't go as planned.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds have so man benefits. If you're not putting chia
seeds in your diet, you should start now! They really don't taste like
anything. I never even notice when I blend them up. I'm not a fan of the chia
seed pudding or anything like that but in a smoothie, you can't taste them and
chia seeds provide many nutritional benefits like antioxidants, fiber,
high-quality protein, promote weight loss, and omega-3 fatty acids to name a
few.
Rice milk or Coconut Milk
I definitely prefer rice milk in my smoothies. It might be a
nostalgia thing because I grew up on Rice Milk, but coconut milk is a decent
second. I can have dairy, I just found that yogurt and 2%milk make my smoothies
so heavy. Rice milk can be naturally sweetened and it provides the right amount
to balance out the tartness of the fruit.
Tip: I make my own Rice milk and freeze it! By making your own rice milk you save a pretty penny in the long run and it is so easy to make!
310 Nutrition Plant-Based Protein Powder
As a vegetarian, I have to get my protein in somewhere. I
use 310 nutrition protein powder in my smoothies because it is free of
caffeine, artificial sweeteners, gluten, and GMOs. I don't want any of that
extra stuff in my smoothie. I just want the protein. 310 Nutrition has better
flavor options than some of its competitors. I've tried coconut, Vanilla,
Chocolate, and even Mint Chocolate chip. They give you plenty of flavors that will fit your taste buds. Get FREE SHIPPING with Code:310JORDANNN or 50% off your order using code 50INFF_CUPOFJOJO. Use whichever code works best for you!
Tip: If you're mixing with peanut butter or peanut butter flavors in smoothies, always go with blueberries as your fruit. They just really compliment one another.
Leafy Greens - Spinach or Kale
You need your vegetables and sometimes a salad isn't always
an option for the day. Get at least 1-2 servings of veggies in the morning
without the added dressings or taste. I pack my smoothie full of spinach or
kale and the fruit overpowers it so I don't even taste the greens. A lot of
moms use this method with their kiddos. They would never even know.
Tip: Blend up water and spinach and pour it into an ice cube tray. Each cube will contain a healthy amount of fresh spinach and you don't have to worry about it wilting
Apple Cider Vinegar
This is my special ingredient.Three teaspoons of ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) has SO many
benefits. It has a very sour bitter taste though so you have to dilute it with
something otherwise it will burn on your throat. Some use water or juice, but I
blend mine up in my smoothie and you can't even taste it. The benefits of apple
cider-like clearing harmful bacterias from my body, it helps to fight diabetes,
helps promote weight loss, and lowers cholesterol to name a few
I use these simple smoothie ingredients all of the time because they are the perfect combination for making smoothies ahead of time or prepping smoothies at
night to take with you in the morning.
My favorite smoothie combinations
I am a creature of habit and tend to draw back to the same
combos, but they taste great and I'm always trying new flavors however these
are the staple morning smoothie choices for me.
Spinach or kale don't change the flavor for me so I go by whatever I
have in the fridge at the time.
