Remember when your only worry in the world was if your
friend down the street would be able to play after dinner? That seems like such
an made up concept now that you're juggling bills, jobs, romance and hopefully
a decent sleep schedule. The pressures of life are really starting to kick in.
You find yourself making more responsible decisions and being less reckless
with your time and money. Where is the fun in that? The thing is, there isn't too much fun in it and that is how you know you’ve entered the adult world.
My idea of being an adult consisted of finally being allowed to wear make-up and having the freedom to drive myself wherever I wanted but there is a whole other side to this adult stuff. While graduating from college, moving out of your parents
house, getting your first big job, and finally being on your own seems like fun
- we all know being an adult isn’t always easy. I’m a new member in the adult
world and I’m realizing I am not the only one on the struggle bus.
Health insurance
When we were sick we would just go to the doctor, mom would
come with us and we would walk out with a lollipop. Now we have to fill out all
of this paperwork on how much medical attention we think we need. Where do you
start?! Healthcare.gov is a really good
resource when it comes to understanding customizable plans. An alternative is
to stay under your parents insurance as long as possible. That’s what I am going with for now.
Cooking for one
Your dinner isn’t going to magically appear on the table. I
see why adults eat out all the time. The last thing you want to do is come home
from work and cook. Give a shout out to your mom for being a real trooper.
Buying groceries isn’t so bad because you have total control
over what food you put in the house. The sucky part is though some of them will
go bad if you don’t use them right away and then your stick eating ramen the
rest of the week.
Buying cleaning products
Who would’ve thought you would be spending your hard earned
cash on Clorox. Do you spend the extra dollar on the brand name items or is the
store brand sufficient? Do you even know how to use a mop? Wait which one is
for the toilet and which one is for the counter?
Making Appointments
Your dentist appointment isn’t going to schedule itself. It
is up to you to pick up the phone and willingly surrender yourself to be poked
and prodded. 1-800- No-Thanx
Credit Cards
Kudos to those who started building their credit early, but
for those who did not here’s your chance to start. There are a lot of companies
out there and its hard to know which one will work for you and which one just
wants to charge high interest rates. CreditCard Insider is a really good resource for finding out which credit card is
best for your needs. Just remember that it is not free money... you will have
to pay it back.
Last but not least…
Paying Bills
Checking the mail is a habit you have to get into doing. Not your inbox.... your mailbox. Say
goodbye to fun post cards and hello to bothersome bills. If there is one thing
in the world you can count on, it is that your bills will come every month. You
don’t need to worry about your electricity bill leaving you; they’re kind of
clingy in that sense. There is nothing worse in the world than when you realize
you have to start paying for everything and don’t have any money to do so.
