Essential
oils are a winter season staple and are really popular right now.
If you are approaching a more
natural way of life, whether that is skincare, healthcare, hair care or even
cooking, oils are going to play a major role. I think essential oils are a
beautiful way to explore treatments to your body, change your mood, and even
ingest. Essential oils are aromatic concentrated plant extracts that are
carefully obtained through steam distillation, cold pressing or resin tapping.
I've heard miraculous stories
about their impact and, since coming to terms with my own health, I can see the difference it is making.
What is important to know about Essential Oils?
Friends don't let friends buy essential oils from the store!
Not all oils are safe. I know the
cheap oil packs you can find at chain stores are enticing, but they all (sadly)
contain toxins. There are very few brands out there that use all-natural
ingredients and are recommended by natural paths or holistic doctors. These
big-name brands use an extract that provides the smell the oil should have, but
not the natural ingredients it deserves.
Beware of the "External Use Only" warning label.
Something you might not know about
essential oils is they are used for external use only. I know what you're
thinking, "That's groundbreaking information, Jordan." Thank you,
because it is! Most essential oil bottles say, "For external use
only." This is important to consider when purchasing oils because that
means to keep the oil on the outside of the body. If you are diffusing an oil,
what are you doing? You're breathing it in... The oil is no longer on the
external part of your body.
I'm aware the average user doesn't
knowingly ingest oils on a regular basis, but if you diffuse oils you should
use an ALL natural oil blend.
What should your essential oil bottle say?
The bottle should tell you
supplement facts. Just like a box of food or a bottle of pills, there should be
supplement facts on your oil bottle so the user knows what it is they are
consuming. That way, you know it's safe to breathe in or even ingest.
Oils are often used in pill
capsules. If the oil bottle says "for external use only" and you put
that oil into a pill capsule because of a blog post somewhere, that someone
without a medical degree wrote, said to include more citrus into your system to
boost your immune system, which could be extremely dangerous for you.
The same goes for diffusing oils
that are not pure. Who knows what type of toxins you are inhaling. The aroma is
nice, but at what cost?
Where do you find All Natural Oils?
I exclusively use Doterra for my
oil needs, but another great brand is Young Living. These companies provide
supplement facts on their labels. If something is for external use only, like
the Doterra Deep Blue Rub, it comes in a lotion format so you know that it is
only external use, whereas a clove oil will come in an oil form and can be
safely consumed.
These brands sell carrier oils,
lotions or have pre-made blends. (Since these oils are pure they can have
stronger reactions on the skin.) They always suggest to pair with a carrier oil
or buy the roll-on version if skin application is the intention. To me, that is
how you know they are looking out for you. They know sometimes their products
can be strong and will let you know what you need to get the most out of your
natural purchase.
Commonly, oils are used to
diffuse, but there are SO many miraculous uses that go unexplored from the
average user. I encourage you to explore those uses like DIY natural skincare
or talk to your doctor about healthcare and oils. Oils are a big world and the
more I look into them the more I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface
of what power they hold.
